Immigration consultant, current 2026 process. YES you can extend a tourist ETA up to a total of 270 days from arrival (initial 30-day ETA + extensions in 60-day and 90-day increments) without leaving. LOCATION: Department of Immigration and Emigration head office at "Suhurupaya", Sri Subhoothipura Road, Battaramulla (Colombo suburb). Take PickMe (~1000-1500 LKR from central Colombo). HOURS: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM weekdays; get there by 7:30 AM for same-day service - the queue starts early. DOCUMENTS: passport (with 6+ months validity), current ETA printout, one recent passport photo, proof of onward ticket, proof of accommodation (hotel booking or lease), and proof of funds (bank statement or ~$50/day equivalent in your account). Some officers also want a letter stating your reason for staying (tourism, wellness, cultural). FEE (2026): first 60-day extension around USD 100 equivalent in LKR, plus small service fees. Second extension similar or slightly more. Pay in cash or by card at their counter.

MALDIVES BORDER RUN comparison: cheapest CMB-MLE return flights around USD 200-300 plus 1-2 nights accommodation in Male (60-100 USD) - total maybe 350-500 USD and 2 days lost. Extension in-country: ~100-150 USD and one morning. Extension WINS unless you actually wanted to visit Maldives. INDIA border run (via Trichy or Chennai) similar cost, more time. So: extend in Colombo for a normal continuation of your trip.

Same-day tips: (1) Photocopy every document you bring twice - they always ask for copies. (2) Bring exact change or a card that works internationally - officers do not make change for large notes. (3) Dress smart-casual, no shorts or singlets; it is a government office. (4) A polite handwritten cover letter helps ("I am enjoying Sri Lanka and would like to extend to see [X] and [Y]"). (5) Apply at least 5 working days before your current ETA expires - overstaying triggers fines and airport hassle even if you have applied late.
