A guy in Tissamaharama tried to sell us VIP tickets to a full moon jungle rave inside the Yala buffer zone. Is this a common scam.

Absolute scam. Raves are strictly illegal in the buffer zone due to wildlife protection laws. You will just lose your money.

They print fake wristbands and everything. Do not buy party tickets from random guys on the street near national parks.

Even if it was real, attending a loud party near Yala disrupts the elephants and leopards. It is highly unethical.
