Besides the massive Esala Perahera in Kandy, you should absolutely attend the Navam Perahera held in Colombo every February. It is organized by the Gangaramaya Temple and features hundreds of traditional dancers, fire breathers, and decorated elephants marching around Beira Lake.

The Kataragama Esala Festival in July or August is another incredible, raw cultural experience in the deep south. It features intense fire walking rituals and spectacular Low Country devil dancing honoring the Hindu god Skanda.
