Ferry back from the island ran late and we missed the last bus inland — sleep near the jetty or private hire at night?

Day trip to an island off the north. Return ferry slipped almost two hours. Ticket office shrugged. Last connecting bus inland already gone. Two backpacks, dark road, little cash left after the boat. Do people usually find a simple room near the jetty, wait for first morning buses, or risk a private van quote at night?

When the ferry eats your connection, overnight near the jetty or in the nearest town beats a panic night hire on a dark road with empty ATMs. Ask the boat ticket desk or a busy guesthouse for a simple room and the first morning bus time — write it down. If you must hire, agree the price in writing or at least aloud with a plate number shared to someone, and prefer a known driver the hotel calls. I will not invent van tariffs. Build slack into island day trips next time; ferries slip.
