Seeing boat ads around Madu Ganga. Is there an ordinary ferry, or only tour prices?

Around Madu Ganga: no to 'museum closed, I know a better temple', no to unmarked gem shops, no to drivers who won't write a fare, no to helpers who aren't the ticket window. Board and counter first.

Said no a lot. Felt rude for five minutes, saved the day. Guesthouse advice beat street advice.

If you're tired, stay nearer the bus stand / town centre in Madu Ganga and skip chasing a perfect sunset. Pull cash in Colombo, Kandy, or Galle first — cards are a maybe. Locals will tell you if a ticket is counter-only.
