Finding a quiet space for Ashtanga near Gal Vihara without offending locals

Do not perform yoga postures directly in front of the Gal Vihara statues. It is considered highly disrespectful to treat the sacred shrine like a gym or a photo op. You can sit silently in the lotus position on the sand at a distance to meditate. If you want to do a physical Ashtanga flow, take your mat to the grassy banks of the nearby Parakrama Samudra lake, well away from the active worship areas.
If you are meditating seated on the ground, ensure the soles of your feet are never pointing directly at the Buddha statues. It is a major cultural taboo.
The lake breeze at the Parakrama Samudra is much better for practice anyway, and you get to see elephants bathing in the distance sometimes.
Remember the dress code applies even if you are just sitting nearby. You must have your shoulders and knees covered, which makes practicing vigorous yoga very uncomfortable anyway.
