Finding car rental companies with insurance that actually works for tourists?
I want to rent a car. How do I make sure the insurance is proper and will actually cover me if something happens?

Use established companies with good recent reviews rather than the cheapest option. Read the insurance terms carefully — many cheap rentals have high excess or exclusions that make the insurance almost useless. Some international companies operating in Sri Lanka have better coverage. Always take photos of the car before driving off and note any existing damage. Third-party liability is usually included but comprehensive coverage for the vehicle itself can be limited. Many experienced travelers still prefer a driver over self-drive for this reason.
This is making me lean back toward using a driver instead. Less hassle.
Ask specifically what the excess/deductible is and whether it covers single-vehicle accidents. Get everything in writing. Some companies will try to charge you for damage that was already there if you don't document it.
