We want to hike Ella Rock without a guide. I heard local farmers deliberately put up fake signs to get tourists lost so they can demand money to rescue them. How do we find the real path.

This is a known issue. Ignore hand-painted signs on pieces of wood. The best defense is to download the offline map for Ella on the app Maps.me before you leave your hotel. It shows the exact footpaths through the tea plantations perfectly. If someone approaches you and says you are going the wrong way, trust your GPS over them.

Start early! By 10 AM the sun is brutal and the path gets crowded with giant tour groups.

The turning point off the railway tracks is right after Kithalella station, at a sharp left turn over a small bridge.
