We are hitting the bars inside Galle Fort tonight to soak in the colonial history. Are there any heritage bakeries open late where we can try traditional Dutch Burgher Breudher cake for a midnight snack.

Unfortunately, you will not find Breudher late at night. Breudher is a traditional Dutch Burgher yeasted cake made with Edam cheese and plums, and it is usually only baked during Christmas or special occasions. Even the heritage cafes inside the fort that occasionally serve it close by 9 PM. If you are partying late, your best bet for food is grabbing a roti from a street vendor outside the fort walls.

If you want Dutch Burgher treats, try visiting the National Museum of Galle during the day; sometimes the nearby cafes sell Kokis and Love Cake.

The nightlife inside Galle Fort is actually very subdued due to strict UNESCO noise ordinances. The bars close early. You have to take a tuk-tuk to Unawatuna if you want to party past midnight.

Pedlars Inn Cafe is a great spot inside the fort for dinner and drinks before 10 PM. The building itself is an amazing piece of colonial architecture.

Breudher is delicious but very dense. It is traditionally eaten for breakfast with butter and Edam cheese, not as a late night party snack!
