First trip to Asia at 58 - is Sri Lanka a good pick or should I go somewhere easier?

Great choice actually. Easier than India, similar or easier than Thailand for first-timers. English widely spoken, food is chili-heavy but plenty of mild options, driving culture is chaotic but chauffeur solves that. What makes it 'easier' vs Thailand: less party/hustle culture, more warmth, smaller country (less internal travel). Book a chauffeur for the whole trip, stay at 3-4 star hotels, do a chef-led food tour, and it's a dream. Age is nothing here - Sri Lankans revere elders.
Retired here at 62. Best decision. Coming for 2 weeks is a great sampler. Chauffeur car + boutique hotels + slow pace = magic. Skip the backpacker corridors (Ella party scene) and stick to heritage properties and coastal luxury. You'll come back.
