Food poisoning - street food or restaurants get people?
3 Answers from travellers
Counter-intuitive answer: it's usually not street food. Busy street food vendors turn ingredients over fast (fresh) and cook everything hot (killing bacteria). What gets people: (1) MID-RANGE tourist restaurants where dishes sit longer, buffets, salads. (2) ICE from unknown sources (in drinks - hotel ice usually filtered, street ice sometimes not). (3) Water washing of salads (raw greens = big risk). (4) Cross-contamination in hotel kitchens with high volume. Street food from a busy vendor cooking on high heat in front of you = often safest. Same-day-open salad bar at a resort = riskier. Follow the busy line.
^ this. Also: pre-trip probiotic (start 2 weeks before, continue during) genuinely reduces GI issues. Research studies support this. Simple habit, real effect.
