Dutch colonial residences inside Galle Fort were engineered for thermal comfort and sanitation within an enclosed defensive grid. Houses feature long, narrow footprints built with thick kabook (laterite) and coral-lime walls. The layout centers on an open interior courtyard (binnenplaats) surrounded by shaded colonnaded verandas. This central void generates a chimney effect: warm air rises out through the open courtyard roof, drawing cool sea breezes in through high louvers facing the street. Subterranean brick storm sewers beneath streets were flushed twice daily by oceanic tides entering sluice gates.
