Filming over Galle Fort requires four sequential approvals: Ministry of Defence (MOD) security clearance, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) flight authorization, a Central Cultural Fund (CCF) commercial filming permit, and notification to the Galle Heritage Foundation. Drones must maintain a 50-meter buffer from the operational Galle Lighthouse (under Ports Authority security) and cannot overfly active naval detachments along the southern rampart wall. Operating without CCF authorization leads to police detention and equipment impoundment.
Strong onshore sea winds generate turbulent air vortices against the sheer stone rampart walls; avoid operating lightweight sub-250g drones close to masonry edges.
Flights scheduled around sunrise between 6:00 AM and 7:15 AM capture clean lighting across the red-tiled roofscapes before pedestrian foot traffic fills the ramparts.
