Galle Fort has cat cafes now is the cat scene real or just one Instagram spot

Galle Fort does not have a "cat cafe scene" in the way you might find in other countries; there is currently only one established cat cafe, The Cat's Whiskers, which opened recently. While it's a single spot, it has gained popularity, particularly on social media, for its unique offering within the Fort.
The Cat's Whiskers is generally well-regarded for its treatment of the cats. They are typically rescue cats, often strays from the local area, who are given a safe and clean environment. Visitors often report the cats appear healthy, well-fed, and socialized, with dedicated staff ensuring their welfare. It's considered an ethical visit as the cafe provides a home and care for these animals, and often supports local animal welfare initiatives.
When visiting, you can expect to pay a small entrance fee or be required to purchase a drink or snack, with a portion of the proceeds often going towards the cats' care and local animal rescue efforts. It's a pleasant spot to relax, enjoy a coffee, and interact with the cats in a calm setting. Always confirm current operating hours and any specific rules for interacting with the animals upon arrival, as these can change.
Galle Fort itself has an unusual abundance of friendly, well-fed CAT RESIDENTS - many fort cafes and boutique hotels adopted strays after the tsunami and now over a decade later there is a genuine community of vaccinated, spayed/neutered cats who wander from cafe to cafe. So it is less a single "cat cafe" and more a Fort-wide cat culture. Specific cafes known for resident cats and friendly to visitors: Pedlar Inn Cafe, Bedspace Cafe, and a few boutique guesthouses. ETHICAL CHECK: the local Galle Animal Welfare Society and a couple of small NGOs actively support these cats with monthly vet check-ups, sterilization, and food donations - many cafes are part of this. Cats are NOT caged, are free to leave anytime, and tourists are asked not to feed them human food (especially the local fish curry, too spicy). If you want to support genuinely, ask the cafe if they accept donations or take recommendations for vet bills. Avoid any cafe that "shows you the cats" in a small room - real fort cats live outside and just visit.
A local NGO worth donating to: Galle Animal Welfare Society. They run the trap-neuter-return program that keeps the fort cat population healthy.
Visiting Pedlar Inn and Bedspace, donating to Galle Animal Welfare. Thanks!
