The Galle Fort Clock Tower, standing 25 meters tall atop the elevated platform of Moon Bastion (Maan), was erected in 1883 as a public memorial honoring colonial police superintendent Peter Daniel Anthonisz, funded by voluntary subscriptions collected from grateful citizens and merchants. Designed in a simple Victorian architectural style with dressed stone quoins and louvered belfry openings, the tower houses a mechanical pendulum clock mechanism that remains fully operational. Its elevated stone platform offers sweeping panoramic views across the fort cricket stadium, the inner rampart grid, and surrounding town streets.
The tower is built directly over a historic bomb-proof gunpowder magazine chamber integrated into the Dutch bastion rampart core.
Walking the rampart walls from Sun Bastion to Moon Bastion brings visitors directly to the base of the clock tower.
