The iconic white concrete lighthouse at Galle Fort stands 18 meters tall atop Point Utrecht Bastion, overlooking the harbor entrance. Constructed in 1938 to replace an earlier 1848 British lighthouse that burned down in a devastating fort fire, the structure is designed in streamlined Art Deco architectural style with curved fluted profiles. Its lantern room originally housed petroleum-vapor optics upgraded later to automated electric revolving lights flashing white beams visible up to 25 nautical miles out to sea, guiding global shipping past the southern maritime approaches.
The base bastion is framed by swaying coconut palms and large black granite boulders pounded by continuous Indian Ocean swells.
The lighthouse grounds are among the most photographed landmarks in Sri Lanka, situated along the southeastern rampart walking circuit.
The interior tower is closed to the public, but the surrounding bastion terrace offers sweeping views of harbor pilot boats and reef breaks.
Intertidal rock pools at the base of the bastion host schooling damselfish, crabs, and grazing chitons.
