While Galle Fort is generally very safe, you will encounter persistent beggars or individuals offering unsolicited historical tours near the main entrance gates. The best strategy is a firm, polite no thank you while completely avoiding prolonged eye contact.
If someone is being exceptionally aggressive, simply walking into one of the many cafes or boutique shops immediately diffuses the situation, as beggars will not follow tourists inside private businesses.
Do not engage in conversation or apologize excessively, as this is often seen as an opening to continue asking for money. Simply keep walking purposefully towards your destination.
Scam Watch: galle
Someone befriends you and offers a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to buy gems at wholesale prices and resell them abroad for huge profit. They may show you fake export certificates. The gems are worthless glass or low-quality stones.
Restaurants without visible prices. Bill arrives with inflated charges (500 LKR coconut becomes 1500 LKR). "Service charges" added without disclosure.
