Getting to Colombo airport for an early morning flight - what actually works at 3am?

I have a 6am departure from Colombo airport and I'm staying in central Colombo. I need to figure out how to get to the airport at 3am without paying a fortune or having nothing show up.

1. Does PickMe or Uber work reliably at 3am in Colombo?
2. Should I book a taxi the night before and if so how do I find a trustworthy one?
3. Is there any public transport option that works this early?
4. What does a taxi from central Colombo to the airport cost at that hour?
5. How far in advance should I be at the airport for an international flight?
6. Is it better to just stay near the airport the night before?
7. What if my app-taxi doesn't show up - what's the backup?
8. Are there any specific taxi companies or contact numbers that are reliable for airport runs?

I'm coming from Brazil and I've had taxis ghost me at 4am before. I want a solid plan not just "PickMe usually works."

I arrange a lot of airport transfers for people I work with. Here's what actually works at 3am.

PickMe and Uber both operate 24 hours but at 3am in central Colombo, driver availability can be thin. I'd say 7 out of 10 times you'll find a car within 5-10 minutes. The 3 out of 10 times you don't is the problem when you have a flight.

The safest approach for an early flight: book a private taxi the evening before through your hotel or guesthouse. Any decent guesthouse will have a trusted driver they use for airport runs and they'll give you a contact number so you can confirm the night before. Price is typically LKR 3,000-4,500 from central Colombo depending on where you're staying. Negotiate and confirm the price the night before.

Alternative: some taxi apps allow scheduled bookings in advance. PickMe has this feature - you can book a car for 3am pickup the day before. This is actually the best combination of price and reliability if it works for your phone and card setup.

For a 6am flight: check-in usually opens 2.5-3 hours before for international flights. Being at the airport by 4am is comfortable. With no traffic at 3am the drive from Colombo to the airport is 30-40 minutes.

What to do if your taxi doesn't show: have two backup numbers. If your guesthouse driver doesn't show up, immediately open PickMe or Uber on your phone. At 3-4am the roads are empty so even a 10-minute wait is recoverable for a 6am flight. Don't panic until you've spent 10 minutes trying to get a car.

Staying near the airport the night before: Negombo has plenty of accommodation 5-10 minutes from the airport and this completely eliminates the problem. Worth considering if your flight is early and you're already at the end of your trip.

Had a taxi booked through my guesthouse for a 4am pickup for a 7am flight. The driver showed up 15 minutes early, which I wasn't expecting at that hour. Had a phone number for him saved and had confirmed the booking by WhatsApp the night before at 10pm. Zero stress. Cost LKR 3,500 from Colombo 3. What I also did: had PickMe open and ready on my phone as backup but didn't need it. Pre-booking the night before through your accommodation is the move.
