Transforming semi-translucent milky Geuda corundum into transparent blue sapphire requires inducing intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) between iron and titanium ions (Fe2+ + Ti4+ <-> Fe3+ + Ti3+). Treaters pack rough stones into sealed alumina crucibles with charcoal powder and fire them inside diesel-blown Lakka furnaces at 1600°C to 1800°C. Maintaining a reducing atmosphere (oxygen-deficient environment) dissolves microscopic rutile (TiO2) silk needles into the crystal lattice while reducing ferric iron (Fe3+) into ferrous iron (Fe2+). Upon cooling, Fe2+ and Ti4+ pair up on adjacent octahedral sites, absorbing yellow-red wavelengths and creating vivid blue coloration.

If the crucible lid seal leaks excess oxygen, an oxidizing atmosphere forms, which converts iron into Fe3+ and produces unwanted greenish-yellow body color.

Crucibles must cool down slowly over 24 hours; rapid thermal shock causes internal stress fractures around dissolved zircon mineral inclusions.

High-temperature heating dissolves internal boehmite needles into circular discoid tension halos visible under gemmological microscopes.

Stones treated in this manner must be disclosed as "Heated" on NGJA export test certificates to comply with international CIBJO consumer rules.

Diesel furnace blowers consume hundreds of liters of fuel per firing cycle, requiring precise air-to-fuel ratio valve balancing to prevent soot clogging.
