The Giant Freshwater Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii / Karawadu Issa) follows an amphidromous life cycle across the twin basins of Bolgoda Lake. Mature adults live upstream in freshwater weed beds and submerged fallen timber. During the onset of inter-monsoon rains, berried females migrate downstream toward the Panadura river mouth where salinity reaches 10 to 14 PSU. Brackish water is physiologically required for the eggs to hatch and larvae to complete their 11 zoeal stages. Post-larvae migrate back upstream into fresh water, utilizing the root matrices of Sonneratia caseolaris mangroves as nurseries to shelter from predatory barramundi and catfish.

Artisanal fishers catch them using traditional brush-parks (kattudel) placed along reed channels, checking them with cast nets before sunrise.

Illegal sand mining near the Panadura estuary mouth damages the shallow saline wedge, disrupting the critical migration run of breeding females.
