Sinhala Buddhist tradition (also Tamil Hindu) has a first head shaving ritual (Muhurthaya or Mundan) around child's 1st birthday — sometimes at Kataragama or another sacred site. The child's hair is offered to the deity. Family gathering, prayers, and celebration follow.

Tourist involvement is rare. Observing at pilgrimage sites (Kataragama especially) is fine — you'll see families having babies' heads shaved by resident barbers. Respectful photos from a distance OK. Culturally meaningful moment; don't turn it into a photo spectacle.
