We booked a very cheap homestay in a tea estate near Haputale. Should we expect hot water showers and room heating, or will it be freezing.

If it is a cheap, authentic homestay in the line rooms of a tea estate, expect zero room heating and likely cold water showers. Haputale sits at a high elevation and drops to 12°C (53°F) at night. Bring thick socks, a fleece jacket, and long pants. Many hosts will boil a bucket of water on the firewood stove for you to take a "bucket bath" if you ask nicely.

The heavy blankets they provide are usually enough to stay warm in bed, but getting out of bed is tough!

Drink lots of the hot black tea they offer, it warms you right up.

The cold mountain air is actually super refreshing after sweating down on the coast for a week.

Yes, power cuts happen frequently during heavy winds. Bring a flashlight or headlamp.

Is there a risk of power cuts up there in the mountains.
