The tectonic suture zone between the Proterozoic Highland Complex and the Vijayan Complex is exposed along the eastern escarpments of the central highlands and down toward Mahiyanganaya and Buttala. The boundary is marked by thrust faults and mylonitized shear corridors exhibiting retrograded granulite-facies gneisses, deformed charnockites, and quartz-feldspar ribbons. Spectacular structural field cross-sections can be inspected in road cuttings along the A26 highway descending the 18 Hairpin Bends (Daha Ata Wanguwa) toward the Mahaweli plains.
Geological hammer sampling and rock specimen collection require a formal scientific research clearance permit from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB).
Attempting to export mineral, rock, or core samples via air freight without GSMB and National Gem and Jewellery Authority mineral export passes results in customs holds.
