We are attempting the Sri Pada pilgrimage next week but want to avoid the Hatton crowds. Is the Ratnapura Erathna route safe right now or are the leeches too bad after the rains.

The Erathna route is the longest, wildest, and most beautiful path to the sacred footprint. However, the April inter monsoon rains have made the lower jungle sections very muddy, and the leeches are highly active. You must wear leech socks and carry salt or Siddhalepa balm.

The crowd on the Erathna route is literally one tenth of the Hatton route. You get a much more spiritual, quiet experience climbing up.

Ensure you bring enough water and high energy snacks. Unlike the Hatton side, the food and tea stalls on the Erathna side are very sparse, especially in the lower half.

Start the hike early afternoon so you can navigate the difficult rocky sections in the daylight before making the final push to the summit at night.

It is a true wilderness adventure. You will cross stunning rivers and waterfalls. Just be very cautious of flash floods if it rains heavily during your ascent.
