Hill country landslide warnings and train delays
5 Answers
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) recently issued a Level 2 landslide warning for parts of Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts due to the heavy rains. The trains are still running, but they operate under severe speed restrictions. Expect significant delays—what is normally a 7-hour journey might take 10 or 12 hours as crews clear fallen trees and small mudslides from the tracks.
I took the train yesterday. It was delayed by 3 hours near Hatton because of a fallen tree. Bring extra snacks and water.
Wow, thanks for the heads up. Is the train journey still scenic in the rain
Yes, arguably more beautiful. The waterfalls are roaring and the mist over the tea fields is incredibly moody.
Do not attempt to hike the trails (like Adam's Peak or Ella Rock) while the heavy rain is active. The paths become incredibly slippery.
