Hiriketiya Bay is a textbook geological horseshoe amphitheater. Swells entering the narrow bay mouth refract around both rocky headlands, pushing water over the shallow coral reef into the center of the basin. This trapped water must escape back out to sea, creating a powerful, persistent rip current that sweeps outward directly along the base of the eastern cliff line. Swimmers caught in this eastern suction current are pulled rapidly out of the bay; lifeguards advise swimming toward the western sandy shallows if caught in the rip.
