I am an intermediate surfer trying to catch the left reef break at Hiriketiya. It is insanely crowded and the locals drop in on every wave. How do you get a wave here.

Hiriketiya is a tiny horseshoe bay, and the left point is highly localized. You cannot just paddle to the peak and expect a wave. You need to sit slightly inside, be patient, and wait for the wide sets. Talk to the locals in the lineup, learn their names, and show respect. If you paddle aggressively, you will be burned on every single wave.

Dawn patrol is your only hope. Get in the water at 5:45 AM before the instructors bring out the massive foam boards.

Honestly, I just go to Dickwella beach next door. It is a beach break, but there is zero crowd compared to Hiri.
