Hiriketiya surf school wants a board damage deposit before the lesson — normal or walk to another hut?

Beginner foam lesson. Instructor seems fine, then the helper asks for a cash damage deposit plus the lesson fee, receipt vague, and jokes about dings being expensive. September chop is already intimidating. Is a deposit standard on this bay, or the start of a ding dispute when I come in?

Small refundable deposits for boards happen at some huts, especially in busier months — ask for the amount in writing, a simple receipt, and the condition notes before you enter the water. Inspect the board together for existing dings. Vague jokes about expensive damage plus pressure to pay extra cash with no paper is a reason to walk to the next shop. Lesson fee and deposit should be separate and clear. Beginners on foam should not be set up for a mystery bill. If the vibe turns salesy, there are multiple teachers on the bay.

I paid a modest deposit, got a scrap receipt, board checked on camera, money back after. The vague-joke hut I skipped.

Walked two huts down, clear receipt, happy foam session. Kept my cash drama on land.
