King Vijayabahu III moved the capital to Dambadeniya in 1232 to protect the Sinhalese kingdom from the devastating South Indian invasions led by Kalinga Magha, who had already destroyed the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa.

The massive Dambadeniya rock provided a perfect, highly defensible natural fortress. From this secure stronghold, the king successfully safeguarded the sacred Tooth Relic and laid the foundation for a massive cultural renaissance.
