We are stopping at Elephant Pass to learn about the civil war history, but I also want to see the ruins of the Dutch Pooneryn Fort. Is the fort overgrown by jungle, and are there crocodiles in the nearby salt pans.

The Pooneryn Fort is currently in ruins and partially overgrown, but you can still clearly see the distinct star-shaped bastions and the remains of the British rest house built inside it. It historically controlled the ancient ferry route connecting the mainland to the Jaffna peninsula.

As for the wildlife, the salt pans and lagoons around Elephant Pass and Pooneryn are teeming with mugger crocodiles and migratory wading birds. Do not walk near the water edge under any circumstances.

The contrast of modern military history, ancient colonial ruins, and raw wildlife at the neck of the Jaffna peninsula is absolutely fascinating. It feels like a completely different country up there.
