The Horton Plains Pygmy Lizard (Cophotis ceylonica) is a rare arboreal agamid endemic to cold, misty cloud forests above 1,800 meters. Spending its entire life clinging to moss-covered tree trunks and branches of Syzygium and Rhodomyrtus, it displays exceptional disruptive camouflage with mottled grey-green skin that mimics crustose lichens. To cope with freezing sub-zero ground frosts that prevent successful subterranean egg incubation, Cophotis ceylonica is strictly ovoviviparous, retaining eggs internally and giving birth to fully formed live young directly onto moist bark substrates.
