World’s End in Horton Plains National Park is a dramatic 880-meter (2,887 ft) sheer vertical precipice marking the southern scrap edge of the central highland plateau. Geologically, it was formed by Cenozoic block faulting and differential uplift that sheared Precambrian khondalite and charnockitic gneiss. Below the cliff, the terrain drops abruptly down to the southern tea estates of Balangoda and the distant ocean. The famous morning "white-out" occurs because cold plateau air trapped overnight warms rapidly under direct tropical morning sunshine after 9:30 AM, generating rising thermal vapor currents that condense into a dense cloud wall filling the valley.
