Horton Plains National Park (elevation 2,100m) opens at 6:00 AM. Visitors must enter by 6:30 AM to walk the circular 9.5km trail counter-clockwise, reaching Little World's End and Greater World's End (an 880-meter sheer precipice) before 9:00 AM. After 9:30 AM, rising thermal air condenses into a thick white cloud wall that completely obscures valley views. The park enforces a strict zero-plastic policy: rangers search backpacks and remove all single-use polythene bags, candy wrappers, and water bottle labels, re-bagging food into paper bags.
The complete trail takes 3 to 3.5 hours, looping through montane cloud forest, wet tussock patana grasslands, and descending to Baker's Falls.
Early morning plateau temperatures often drop to 8°C; dress in removable layers as sunshine warms the open plains rapidly by 10:00 AM.
