Hotel bathroom tap for brushing teeth in Unawatuna — bottled only or am I being paranoid?
Second night in a mid-range Unawatuna guesthouse. They refill a big dispenser in the lobby and leave sealed bottles in the room, but the bathroom tap is just… tap. Partner is brushing with it. I keep thinking about traveler stomachs and monsoon runoff. Is bottled-only for brushing still the boring safe call, or do hotels on the south strip usually filter what comes out of the faucet?

Bottled or the lobby dispenser for drinking and brushing is still what I tell guests. Municipal tap on the south coast is not consistently traveler-safe, and smaller places do not always run hotel-grade filters to every bathroom faucet. Ice in busy tourist cafes is often from filtered blocks, but if a stall looks sketchy, skip the ice. Sealed bottles with an intact cap beat a pretty bathroom sink. If the guesthouse says the tap is filtered, ask how — many mean the kitchen only. Paranoia here is cheap compared to losing two beach days.
We put sealed bottles in rooms on purpose. Tap is for washing hands and showers, not for your toothbrush if you are newly arrived.
Bought a six-pack and switched. Partner rolled eyes until the Canadian next door said the same thing.
I brush bottled for the first week everywhere in Sri Lanka. After that I still mostly do. Not worth the experiment.
