Hotel card machine asked to charge in USD or LKR — dynamic conversion trap or honest choice?
Colombo hotel desk, Visa tapped, terminal offered home currency vs local rupees. Forums scream never choose the foreign amount. Is that still the rule of thumb here, or do some hotels offer a fair rate? I do not want invented percentages — just what travelers actually tap.

When the machine offers your home currency versus LKR, that is usually dynamic currency conversion. Most travelers decline DCC and pay in LKR so their own bank does the conversion. Hotel staff should not pressure you; ask them to select local currency / LKR if the prompt is confusing. Rates on the terminal can look convenient and still be worse than your card network. I will not quote a magic savings number. Check your banking app later; if something looks wrong, keep the receipt and talk to the desk the same day.
Always tap LKR. One hotel pushed USD hard; I asked them to cancel and rerun in rupees. Took thirty seconds.
Chose LKR. Desk nodded like that was normal. Forum panic slightly overtuned but the habit seems right.
Same prompt at a restaurant in Galle. Declined conversion, paid LKR, moved on.
