Hotel in Sigiriya 15 min from the rock - problem for sunrise?

15 min is fine. Most Sigiriya hotels are 5-20 min from the rock (there aren't hotels adjacent to it). Practical: gate opens 6am. If your hotel is 15 min away, leave 5:30am, arrive 5:45, be in line by 6, at the summit by 7:30 (max) for the best light on the surroundings. Not the rock itself, but the mist over the paddies from the summit is the shot. Coordinate with hotel breakfast (5am packed breakfast is standard here).
^ this. Ask hotel to arrange dawn tuk-tuk or car in advance so you're not scrambling at 5:30am. Also ask about packed breakfast - most Sigiriya hotels do this without extra charge for sunrise climbers. Standard practice.
