Hotels direct vs Booking.com - actually cheaper or same?
3 Answers from travellers
Sometimes real, sometimes not. Chain hotels (Cinnamon, Jetwing) have loyalty programs and DIRECT rates that beat Booking.com when you factor in points/upgrades. Boutique guesthouses often match Booking.com or offer 5-15% off for direct (they don't pay platform commission). Best strategy: find rate on Booking.com, screenshot, email/WhatsApp property, ask 'can you match this if I book direct'. Most will offer 10-15% off OR value-adds (free breakfast, room upgrade, late checkout). Some won't budge. Worth 5 minutes to try - can save $30-100 per stay.
^ this. Also: some properties give better rooms to direct bookers (Booking.com bookings get standard-room-first). Direct bookers get flexibility. Only downside of direct: less recourse if property tries to renege. Balance risk against savings.
