I am visiting Sri Lanka in August specifically to see the famous Esala Perahera in Kandy. How do I secure decent viewing seats and what should I expect on the day.

Reserved seats along the procession route open for booking about three weeks before the festival starts. Prices range from twenty to one hundred dollars per person depending on the location and the specific night you choose. The final Randoli Perahera night is the most spectacular and most expensive. Book through your hotel or any reputable Kandy travel agency well in advance.

Expect over a hundred decorated elephants, fire dancers, whip crackers, traditional drummers, and the sacred tooth relic casket carried by the magnificent Maligawa Tusker. Photography without flash is allowed but tripods are usually not permitted in the seating areas. Dress modestly out of respect for the deeply religious nature of the procession.

Arrive at your seat at least three hours before the procession officially begins. The streets get completely closed off and walking through the crowds becomes nearly impossible once it starts. Bring a small cushion as the wooden bench seats become extremely uncomfortable during the four hour spectacle.
