The famous ornamental stone staircase at Yapahuwa is indeed incredibly steep, with extremely narrow individual steps originally designed to be easily defensible against invaders. It looks intimidating, but it is a relatively short climb.

Take it very slowly, use your hands for balance if necessary, and avoid looking down until you reach the secure landing at the top. The magnificent architecture and the sweeping views make the brief climb entirely worth it.
