I rented a board for the south coast and now want to move with the season to Arugam Bay How do surfers actually move boards between coasts here Is there a courier service or do I tuk tuk it across the country Will my rental shop accept return at Arugam

The most common and practical way for surfers to move a surfboard from the South Coast to the East Coast, especially Arugam Bay, is by private taxi or van, as courier services specifically for surfboards are not widely available or reliable for this route. While a tuk-tuk is feasible for shorter distances, the journey from the South Coast to Arugam Bay is too long and uncomfortable for a surfboard (around 8-10 hours) and would be very expensive.
Your rental shop will almost certainly not accept a return at Arugam Bay. Rental agreements are typically tied to the specific shop location. You will need to return the board to the South Coast shop where you rented it before making your way to Arugam Bay. It's always best to confirm this directly with your rental shop when you rent the board.
After returning your rental, you can then travel to Arugam Bay and rent another board there. If you own your board, a private taxi or van is still the best option. You can negotiate a price for a dedicated vehicle that can comfortably accommodate you and your board. Expect to pay anywhere from LKR 25,000 to LKR 40,000 (USD 80-130) for a private car or van from a South Coast town like Mirissa or Weligama to Arugam Bay, but prices can vary, so always confirm locally. Alternatively, you could take public transport (bus or train) to a major hub like Colombo or Ella, and then arrange a private transfer from there, but this involves more hassle with a surfboard.
Few practical options. (1) RETURN AND RE-RENT: easiest. Return your south-coast rental, take a regular bus or chauffeur to Arugam, rent a different board there. Many south-coast and east-coast surf shops have informal partnerships and may discount the second rental if you bring a receipt. (2) DEDICATED SURF COURIER: small operators run weekly board-only minibuses between Weligama/Hiriketiya and Arugam Bay in the seasonal switch months (April-May and September-October). Cost 4000-7000 LKR per board one-way, takes 1-2 days. Ask at any surf shop in Hiriketiya or Weligama - the operators are well-known locally. (3) CHAUFFEUR WITH ROOF RACK: if you are driving with a chauffeur anyway, ask if their car has a roof rack; many do. Add 1000-2000 LKR to the day rate. (4) BUS WITH BOARD: technically possible on long-haul buses but they will charge a luggage rate and the board takes damage. Not recommended for nice boards. For most travelers, option (1) is the right answer - simpler and the shops handle it.
Returning and re-renting at Arugam, asking about partner programs. Sweet, cheers.
A growing trend: some south-coast shops now have a partner shop at Arugam and let you drop the same board on the east coast for a small one-way fee. Ask before renting if this matters to you.
