Esala Perahera is a 10-day pageant honoring the Tooth Relic, culminating in the final RANDOLI PERAHERA night with 100+ caparisoned elephants, hundreds of fire dancers, drummers, whip-crackers and flag bearers. The 2026 dates are set by the lunar calendar around Esala Poya (late July / early August); confirm exact dates 4-6 weeks ahead on the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) website. GRANDSTAND TICKETS are essential for the peak final nights - streetside standing gets impossibly crowded by 2 PM for a 7-8 PM procession. Grandstand seats run 3,000-15,000 LKR depending on location (rooftop bank buildings command the highest prices for the elevated angle). Bookings open ~4 weeks before; use Temple-authorized agents or your hotel concierge, NOT random online sellers with inflated prices. On lesser nights (Kumbal Perahera, first 5 nights), you can often walk up and find a grandstand seat.

Photography rules and etiquette. NO FLASH photography once the procession starts - the elephants are trained to tolerate crowds and drums but flash startles them and creates a real safety risk (elephants have run into crowds when spooked). DRONE flying is banned within a large radius of the procession route. Tripods are allowed only in grandstands, not streetside. Dress code: cover shoulders and knees, no hats when the Tooth Relic casket passes (usually near the end - you will see people stand and press hands together, follow their lead). Arrive at your grandstand seat 2-3 hours before the procession starts to settle in with water and snacks.

ACCOMMODATION warning that catches people out: Kandy hotels are FULLY BOOKED 4-6 months ahead for the final Perahera weekend, and rates triple. Book by January-February for a July-August Perahera. If Kandy is fully booked, base in Peradeniya (10 min drive) or Digana (30 min drive) and taxi in for the evening. Alternative: many smaller village peraheras across Sri Lanka (Kataragama Perahera in July-August is huge, Bellanwila and Gangaramaya peraheras near Colombo in August-September) offer similar elephant-and-dance spectacle without the Kandy pricing.

Went in 2024 - grandstand seat at the Queen's Hotel side of the route was worth every LKR. Book hotel by February, hotel concierge got me legit grandstand tickets. Astonishing experience.
