I follow a completely vegan diet with no dairy or eggs whatsoever. Will I struggle in Sri Lanka where coconut milk and curd seem to be in everything or are vegan options easy to find.

Sri Lanka is actually surprisingly vegan friendly once you understand the local cuisine. The traditional rice and curry meal is naturally vegan in most cases as the curries are cooked with coconut milk rather than dairy. Coconut milk is plant based and used everywhere making it the perfect creamy substitute for cream or yogurt. Try plain string hoppers, plain hoppers without egg, pittu, kiribath made with coconut milk, kottu without egg and cheese, dhal curry, jackfruit curry, and various vegetable mallung dishes. Always specifically clarify no curd, no ghee, and no cheese when ordering as these can sneak into otherwise vegan meals. The buffalo curd called mee kiri is everywhere so always ask. Download the HappyCow app which lists dedicated vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Colombo, Galle, Ella, and Kandy. Many trendy cafes in Ella and Mirissa now cater specifically to the growing vegan tourist crowd with creative plant based menus including tofu scrambles, smoothie bowls, and homemade nut milks.
