How easy is it to travel plastic free in Sri Lanka in 2026

Easier than ever but not seamless. Sri Lanka has progressively banned certain single-use plastics (lunch sheets, thin plastic bags at shops, expanded polystyrene), so most supermarkets give paper or charge for cloth bags. For water, the refill culture is growing: many eco-lodges, hostels, cafes and yoga places now offer free or low-cost refills from filtered jugs (look for "RefillMyBottle" or similar signs in surf towns like Hiriketiya, Ahangama and Ella). A travel filter bottle (LifeStraw, Grayl) means you can fill anywhere, including tap. For meals, carry a small reusable cutlery set and ask cafes to skip the straw and plastic spoon. Reef-safe sunscreen is harder to find locally; bring your own. Sri Lanka rewards a little effort here.
Filter bottle, reusable cutlery, no-straw default. Easy enough. Kiitos!
Refused dozens of plastic straws by saying "no straw" upfront when I ordered. Most places were fine with it. A tiny habit but it adds up over a trip.
