Polonnaruwa is incredibly compact compared to Anuradhapura. If you rent a bicycle, you can comfortably explore all the major highlights, including the Royal Palace, the Quadrangle, and the magnificent Gal Vihara rock carvings, in about three to four hours.

You do not need multiple days. Renting a bike at the main gate and spending a single morning there before the midday heat becomes unbearable is the perfect itinerary.

If you hire a tuk tuk driver to take you between the main clusters of ruins, you can easily compress the visit into a highly efficient two hour tour without missing anything major.
