I am quite scared of dogs and I heard there are many strays everywhere. Are they aggressive towards tourists and what should I do if one approaches me on the street.

The vast majority of Sri Lankan street dogs are completely peaceful and totally uninterested in tourists. They mostly just sleep in the shade during the day. Simply walk past them calmly without making direct eye contact and do not attempt to pet or feed them. Avoid sudden movements and never run as this can trigger a chase response.

It is highly recommended to get a rabies pre exposure vaccination before your trip just as a safety precaution. If you are ever bitten or even slightly scratched by any street animal you must immediately visit the nearest government hospital for post exposure treatment. Most major town hospitals offer this service completely free of charge.
