A genuine retreat starts with a consultation by a qualified Ayurveda physician who assesses your dosha/constitution and prescribes a personalised plan, not a fixed menu. Look for: a registered doctor on site, individualised herbal preparations and diet, and treatments scheduled by your assessment rather than by the clock. A spa just offers oil massages with no diagnosis. On panchakarma: a true cleanse properly needs 2 to 3 weeks and medical supervision, so on a short trip do a gentle "mini" programme rather than an aggressive purification. Tell the doctor about any medications and conditions first, it is real medicine, not pampering.

Is the special Ayurveda diet very strict during the programme

The southwest coast (around Beruwala, Bentota, Ahungalla) has the long-established dedicated Ayurveda resorts. The hill country has quieter herbal/wellness retreats if you prefer cool air over beach.

Exactly the clarity I needed. Booking a doctor-led retreat on the southwest coast with a gentle programme. Danke!

During a cleanse, yes, it is light, mostly vegetarian, warm and easy to digest, with no alcohol and reduced caffeine. That is part of why it works. A wellness stay without a cleanse is much more relaxed about food.
