I want to see leopards and elephants but I have seen videos of dozens of jeeps surrounding one leopard at Yala How do I pick a responsible safari and is there a less crowded park that is still good

Yala Block 1 has the highest leopard density but also the worst jeep crowding. For a calmer, more ethical experience try Wilpattu (leopards, far fewer jeeps) or Kumana in the east for birds and elephants. To choose a responsible operator: ask if they keep distance and never block an animals path, avoid drivers who promise "guaranteed" sightings (they speed and harass animals), and pick guides who turn the engine off and wait quietly. A naturalist-led private jeep costs more but the experience is night and day.

Go for the first morning slot at gate opening, not the late afternoon rush. Fewer jeeps and the animals are more active in the cool early hours.

Please skip any place offering elephant rides or bathing photo ops. Genuine ethical viewing is from a vehicle at a distance in a national park, never hands-on with captive animals.

Booking a morning private jeep at Wilpattu and adding Udawalawe for elephants. Thank you all so much.

For elephants in big herds, Udawalawe is reliable and the jeeps spread out more than at Yala. We saw 40 plus elephants and only a handful of vehicles.
