How to find and respectfully attend smaller local festivals or temple events?
I want to experience authentic cultural events. How do I find them and behave appropriately?

Every temple and village has its own smaller festivals and poya day celebrations throughout the year. These are often more intimate than the big famous peraheras. They're usually announced locally rather than widely advertised. Asking your guesthouse host or other locals what's happening during your stay is the best way to find them. Dress modestly, remove shoes when appropriate, be quiet and respectful, and follow what others do. Photography during active ceremonies is often inappropriate. Many locals are happy to explain basic customs if asked respectfully. These smaller events can be deeply meaningful when approached with genuine respect rather than as a tourist checklist item.
Ask locally — smaller events happen all the time but aren't heavily marketed. Dress modestly and follow local customs.
