I want to join local events without being intrusive. Any guidance on how to do this well?

The most respectful approach is to be invited or clearly welcomed rather than inserting yourself. Asking your guesthouse host or local contacts if there are any community events happening and whether visitors are welcome is a good start. When attending, dress appropriately, be quiet and observant, follow what others do, and don't dominate or disrupt. Small gestures of respect and gratitude go a long way. Some events are more open to visitors than others. Being genuinely interested and respectful rather than treating it as entertainment usually leads to better interactions. If in doubt, observe from a respectful distance or ask permission.

Being invited or clearly welcomed makes all the difference. Hosts can often help facilitate appropriate participation.
