Spotting high quality synthetic fakes is almost impossible for an untrained tourist eye. You must absolutely never buy loose stones from random street dealers or tuk tuk drivers offering special deals.

The only guaranteed way to avoid scams is to strictly purchase from highly reputable, established jewelers and explicitly demand an official certification from the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.

If a dealer makes excuses about why they cannot provide a government certificate, or if the price seems unbelievably cheap for a flawless blue sapphire, it is 100 percent a scam. Walk away instantly.
